5 Signs You’re Drifting from God

Hi, Lepora here!

I want to talk to you about something that’s incredibly important: the signs that you may be drifting from God.

Just like any relationship—actually, even more so—your relationship with God has direction. It’s either growing stronger or slowly drifting. And if you’re not intentional about nurturing it, you might find yourself farther from Him than you realized.

We talked about spiritual burnout in another blog, and I believe drifting comes right after that phase. So here are five signs to watch out for:

1. Your Prayer Life Feels Like a Script

You ever find yourself praying and it feels more like a routine than a real conversation?

It’s like you’re reciting lines instead of pouring your heart out. When prayer becomes a duty rather than a delight, that’s a red flag. God wants intimacy with us—genuine connection, not rehearsed speeches.

2. Your Mind Wanders During Time with God

I’ll be honest: sometimes I’m praying, and suddenly I’m thinking about the 10 things I need to get done that day.

When we’re not fully present with God—when our mind is everywhere else—it can be a sign that our hearts are disconnected. That intimacy, that tuning in, is missing.

3. You’re Choosing Comfort Over Growth

We all like comfort, but when we constantly avoid challenges, conviction, or correction, we may be drifting.

If you only read Bible verses that feel good but skip the ones that stretch you, it’s possible you’re shielding yourself from the transformation God is trying to do in your life.

4. You Seek Others’ Opinions Before Seeking God

This one hits hard.

When we face tough situations, who do we go to first—God, or people?

Yes, God sends wise counsel into our lives, but He should always be our first stop. Not social media. Not Google. Not even our best friends. Relying on other sources before God creates distance from Him.

5. You’re Emotionally Disconnected in Worship

You know those times when you’re in church or listening to worship music, and you just… don’t feel anything?

Maybe you’re distracted, frustrated, or even a little upset with God (let’s be real—it happens). But if this becomes a pattern, it’s a sign to check your heart. Worship isn’t about a performance—it’s about connection.

Bonus Sign: Compartmentalizing Your Faith

If God is only part of your life on Sundays—or when things go wrong—you’re putting Him in a box.

But He’s not just your Sunday God. He’s Lord of your every day, every moment. If we really believe He’s omnipresent, all-knowing, and sovereign, then He should be part of every area of our lives.

The truth is, we often forget how powerful God is, and how involved He wants to be. He’s not a genie. But He’s given us free will—and He’s waiting for us to invite Him in as the navigator of our lives.

So let’s be intentional. Let’s recognize the signs, and when we see them, let’s draw near to Him again.

If this blessed you, share it with someone who might need this reminder today.

Have a wonderful day—take care!
